ALLEN FRUITS
Source: Iva Lewis Obituary Scrapbook
Allen Fruits was born 1852 near Alamo, Ind., and died at his home in Jackson township July 9, 1899. His life was nearly all spent in Fountain and Montgomery counties, with the exception of a short time spent in the west. Exposure while out west brought on an attack of rheumatism which finally resulted in his death. He has four sisters and one brother who survive him: Rebecca Ann, who lives east of Crawfordsville, Mary Keys of Waynetown, Barbara Bettice of Covington, Vina Maltesberger of near Alamo, and John A. Fruits of Yeddo. His first wife was Jane Meaks, who died in 1882. She was the mother of four children: Bert, who is somewhere in the north-west, Arthur, who belongs to the regular army, Grace, who lives near Steam Corner, and Alta, who was adopted by Uncle Dennis Wilson and his good wife. His second wife was a Miss Bolton, with whom he lived but a short time. Though our acquaintance with Allen Fruits was limited to the four brief years he resided in this neighborhood, we can say that he was one of nature’s noblemen; a man whose life is well worth imitating. He was a sober, industrious, whole-souled neighbor and friend and generous to a fault. Although sorely afflicted with rheumatism for a long time, he always presented a smiling countenance and a happy greeting to everybody. He, like everyone, had his troubles in life, but through it all steadily mantained a noble manhood. Undertaker Shuler, of Wallace, took charge of the remains and interment took place in the McCormack cemetery. The near relatives extend their heart-felt thanks to those who aided in the last sad rites of their loved one. They alone do not mourn, as the whole circle of his acquaintance sadly lament our mutual loss. CLAY THOMPSON – jlr
