Darlington - Arthur B. Friend, 65 who operated AB Friend Sundries here 23 years, died at 5:15 pm Thursday in Eastview Manor Nursing Home at Sullivan, Ill. Mr. Friend worked in Yount Drug Store at New Market for a time, then he and a brother, Buford, operated it for several years. Later he moved to Crawfordsville and worked at the former Kostanzer Drug Store. After that he purchased the drug store at Darlington. The store here was sold six years ago. He was also well known in the Polled Shorthorn Association. Mr. Friend owned a farm south of Darlington where he raised registered cattle which won a number of awards in state and 4-H fairs. He was a member of Solomon Christian Church and Darlington Masonic Lodge. Mr. Friend was born Oct 24, 1908, southwest of New Market, a son of Theodore and Fannie Myers Friend. He was graduated from New Market HS in 1928 and was married to Pauline Galey Nov 19, 1930. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Sharon Kay Vannice of Sullivan, Ill; a brother, Buford of New Market; three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Swearingen; Mrs. Ethel Hester and Mrs. Opal Rice, all of Crawfordsville; two grandsons, Darren and Derek and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home at Crawfordsville - kbz
