WAYNETOWN — William A. Freeman, 78, owner and operator of the Crawfordsville Candy Co. for 26 years before his retirement, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville after an illness of five weeks. He was a former member of the Crawfordsville City Council. The family resided at 111 Marshall St. in Crawfordsville for many years. Mr. Freeman, a graduate of Waynetown High School, was a 50-year member of Waynetown Masonic Lodge 302 F&AM and the Wesley Methodist Church. He was a past commander of Byron Cox Post 72 American Legion at Crawfordsville. During World War I, he served as a member of the 151st Aero Squadron of the U.S. Army, spending considerable time in France. He enlisted Nov. 20, 1917 and was discharged March 25, 1919. He was born in the Wesley area June 26, 1890, a son of John and Anna (Quick) Freeman. He was married at Crawfordsville Oct. 26, 1921, to Helen Vaughan. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Preston of Muncie, and two grandchildren, Colleen Ann and Patrick Joseph Preston. He was preceded in death by a brother, L. J. C. Freeman, former Crawfordsville High School principal. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Servies-Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with Rev. Guy Tremaine and Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry F. Ward officiating. Interment will be in Wesley Cemetery. Friends may pay respects at the funeral home after 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
