Lucy F. Freeman was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, Jan. 12, 1830, and died at the residence of her son-in-law, George W. Lynn, near Mace, July 14, at 8 p.m., aged 65 years, six months and two days. Her parents’ name was Shannon and she came with them to Montgomery County and settled near Parkersburg when she was six years of age. She was married to Samuel M. Freeman, June 26, 1850. To this union there were born five sons and five daughters. All the daughters and one son survive. Her husband was for many years one of the leading instructors in vocal music in this part of this state and contributed probably more than any other one person to the training of the leaders of song in this country.

Mr. Freeman died Oct. 17, 1894, at the age of 67 years, five months and eleven days. Since the death of her husband she has gradually declined in health and strength. She called to her aid quite a number of physicians but without avail. Her heart was with her husband. United in life they were not long separated by death. She was ready when the crisis came. Rev. John M. Stafford preached the funeral sermon at the M. E. Church at Mace from “She hath done what she could.” Interment was at Darlington in the Odd Fellows’ Cemetery.

Mrs. Freeman was a model wife, mother and fulfilled the ideal character presented by the wise man as well as a woman could possibly do. “The heart of husband trusted in her.” “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” She sleeps well after the long life of usefulness and her memory is blessed to all who knew her best or heard of her good deeds. – thanks to “S” for all the typing !
