L.J.C. Freeman, principal at the Crawfordsville Senior High School 20 years, died Wednesday night, June 1, at Culver Hospital where he had been taken early Monday morning after suffering a heart attack at his home.

He had not been well Sunday but had attended baccalaureate services that evening. His death occurred while commencement exercises were being held Wednesday night.

Mr. Freeman was one of Indiana's best known school men and was identified with many state and national educational organizations.

Born 61 years ago, on a farm in the Wesley neighborhood, northwest of Crawfordsville, he spent his boyhood there. He was graduated from the Crawfordsville HS in 1904 and from Wabash College in 1908. Later he received his Master's degree from Indiana University.

At Wabash he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fratenrity and also was a member of Wabash's national championship basketball teams during the 1906, 1907 and 1908 season.

He taught his first school at Wingate going from there to Crawfordsville wher ehe had been a member of the high school faculty for 35 years.

Mr. Freeman was a member of the official board of First Methodist Church in Crawfordsville, the Kiwanis and the Masonic Lodge.

In June 1911 he was married to Miss Helena Johnston at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen G. Kersey in Darlington.

The widow survives as does a brother, William A. Freeman, Crawfordsville businessman. Their only child, a son, John Newton Freeman, a Marine Lt, was killed in action on Saipan June 15, 1944.

Funeral services wer eheld at FIrst Methodist Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the pastor, Rev. Almon Coble and Dr. C. Howard Taylor, minister emiritus, officiating. Burial was in the Wesley cemetery. A memorial service for Mr. Freeman was held in the high school auditorium Thursday morning with school officials and students participating.

H.T. McCullough, principal of the junior high school, presidened. Gerald Alexander, superintendent of schools, gave a memorial prayer after which he praised Mr. Freeman for his devotioni to the school and his philsophy as an educator.

A moment of silence was observed after which the senior and junior high schools were dismissed for the remainder of the day.

Crawfordsville June 2 – Death came to LJC (Brandy) Freeman, 61, principal of Crawfordsville HS during the hour of the hs commencement last night. A heart attack suffered Sunday at his home following baccalaureate services sent him to Culver Hospital here. Mr. Freeman was born in Montgomery County and had been principal of the senior high school 20 years. Prior to that he taught 10 years in the school and also served as basketball coach. A 1904 graduate of CHS he was graduated in 1908 at Wabash College where he was a member of the basketball teram which won national honors in 1906-07.  He was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis Club and Phi-Delta Theta Fraternity. His son, John N. Freeman was killed on Saipan while serving with the Marines. Survivors are the widow, Mrs. Helena Freeman and a brother, William Freeman, Crawfordsville.  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm. Saturday in the First Methodist Church here. The Rev. Almon J. Coble, pastor and Dr. C. Howard Taylor pastor emeritus of the church will officiate. Burial at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.  – kbz
