William E. Francis was born Dec. 5, 1850 and departed this life Aug. 31, 1897, aged 46 years, 8 months and 26 days. He was a member of a family of nine children, three boys and six girls, two of the latter being only half sisters. Of this number only four survive him, one brother and three sisters. His aged mother, who still survives, is the only living charter member of the Christian Church of Center Grove, which was organized Sept. 20, 1848. The Christian life of this noble woman was so impressed upon our deceased brother that he in early manhood—about 1869—united with the Christian Church, of which he has remained a faithful and consistent member. On Jan. 29, 1874, he was joined in marriage to Miss Lettie Mote. To this union was born one child, Pearl, a bright girl, now of thirteen summers. Will, as he was familiarly known, was a kind husband, a devoted father, a loving son and brother, and a true and genial friend. To know him was to love him, as he was a jolly, kind hearted man. He was an honored and respected member of the Improved Order of Red Men and Miona Council. He bore his affliction like a true hero. His last hours were exemplary of a Christian and he died in full faith of the life beyond. The funeral services were held at the South Christian Church, Darlington, conducted by Rev. F. P. Trotter. Interment was at Lutheran Cemetery. Services at the cemetery were conducted by the Red Men. -s
