THOMAS FRANKLIN FOXWORTHY

Source: Unknown Carroll County Iowa newspaper

Passed away Sunday at age of 84 - came to Carroll Co., Iowa in 1877 Thomas Foxworthy, one of the oldest Carroll County settlers, died Sunday (2 June 1908) after several day's illness, the cause of his death being attributed mainly to old age. The deceased was a man of rugged character possessing much fearlessness in political and other public affairs. He began as a Whig and became a Republican at the birth of the party. Even in his old age, he kept his interest alive in political affairs of the county. He was what could be termed a Simon pure Republican; a strong protectionist and in all elections, a steadfast friend of his party. He was quite prominent in party councils in his younger and more active years, being a familiar figure at county and state conventions. He also had a liking for law and was a justice of the peace for several terms and could make a good plea in the local courts. Had he been educated in law he would no doubt have made his impression upon the bar of his locality. He had decided opinions as the right and wrong of things and little patience with compromise. He was a man of high honor, a good neighbor and faithful friend and will be missed from the community. Thomas Foxworthy was born in Clark County, Kentucky, April 4, 1823, died at his home in Carroll County, Iowa, June 2, 1907, at 8 a.m., aged 84 years, 1 month, 28 days. His parents came to Montgomery County, Indiana, and settled near Ladoga, in the fall of 1828, where they cleared a farm from the forest, and where the subject of the sketch grew to manhood. He removed to Wayne County, Iowa, in 1872, from there to Carroll County in 1877, where he resided until his death. Thomas Foxworthy was married to Elizabeth Conklin, January 16, 1855 in Greencastle, Indiana. To this union were born eleven children, one of which died in infancy and another, Mrs Emmet Pyle, in December, 1902. Those that survive him are: Mrs James Ruark, Mrs E M Nelson, Mrs O W Pyle and Mrs Herbert McLain of Ralston, Iowa, William Foxworthy of Glidden, Iowa, Daniel Foxworthy, John Foxworthy, Mrs A W Graves of Coon Rapids, Iowa and Rev. Theo. Foxworthy of Bloomfield, Nebraska. The deceased was converted at the age of seventeen years and united with the Baptist Church where he labored with that organization until a few years ago when he united with the Friends, remaining a consistent worker until his death. The funeral was conducted at the Friends Church, Tuesday morning by Rev. Abbie Lake, assisted by Rev. Harned. A large number of friends and neighbors assembled to pay their last respects to the departed, after which the remains were interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Coon Rapids, Iowa. (JS)
