Rev. Elston Lee Fowler, 48, local resident and former missionary to Spanish - speaking people in Colorado and WWII Navy veteran died Thursday night in the Veteran Hospital at Indianapolis. Death was caused by a brain tumor. Rev. Fowler and his wife, and children resided in Crawfordsville at 819 S. Green Street since July of 1962. They came to Cawfordsville from Denver, Colorado where last May he had received brain surgery at a Denver hospital. Rev. Fowler was born near Waynetown Nov 24, 1914 the son of Arley Lee and Viola Horn Fowler. He was married to Onalee Osborn in march of 1946 in Crawfordsville at the First Baptist Church. Mr. Fowler was raised in the Liberty Chapel vicinity and attended the old Breaks School and Crawfordsville HS. He was graduated from Broad Ripple HS in Indianapolis. Additional education was received at UCLA in California, the National Bible Institute of New York City and he later attended the Grand Rapids Seminary. As an ordained Baptist minister Rev. Fowler served as missionary to the Spanish - speaking people in Lamar and Durango, Colo from 1952 until 1962. Rev. Fowler was a veteran of WWII. He served with the US Navy stationed in the South Pacific as a aviation machinist's mate third class. Survivors of Rev. Fowler include the widow; five children at home; a brother, Rev. Howard Fowler of Mount Vernon, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Russell L. Hepler of Orange, Calif and Mrs. Eddy Eakle of Crawfordsville; an uncle and five aunts. He was preceded in death by a sister, Amy Fowler. Funeral services will be held at Pleaant View Baptist Church Monday at 11 a.m.with Rev. Paul Hubble pastor officiating. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home beginning 7 p.m. Saturday.
