William Andrew Flaningam, 86, a native of Darlington and a former resident of Crawfordsville, died Wednesday in Champaign, Ill. After having been a patient for one day, Mr. Flaningam, who lived at 702 W. Hill St. in Champaign, died at 7:15 a.m. in Cole Hospital there. He had been in failing health for the last two years. He was born on Jan. 13, 1875, near Darlington and was the son of Andrew and Margaret Strain Flaningham. He was married to the former Edith Elizabeth Coulson on Nov 7, 1907, in Thorntown. After their marriage the couple lived in Crawfordsville while Mr. Flaningam was traveling as a representative for Layman Carey Hardware Co. of Indianapolis. He took a job with Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett wholesale hardware firm of Chicago in 1911. With his new job Mr. Flaningam was representative for the firm in East Central Illinois and the couple moved to Champaign where they had lived since. After 37 years of traveling, he retired in 1942 and since then had devoted much of his time to managing his birthplace farm near Darlington. Mr. Flaningam, who celebrated his golden wedding anniversary with his wife in November of last year, was a member of this First Presbyterian Church in Champaign. He had served the church as both a deacon and an elder, and was a member of th Men’s Club of the church. He was also affiliated with Darlington Lodge 186, F&AM, of which he was a member since 1898. He was a member of Champaign Commandery 68, Knights Templar and United Commercial Travelers. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son, Thomas Coulson Flaningam, Elmhurst, Ill; two daughters, Mrs. Orner W. Jones, Murphysboro, Ill, and Mrs. Robert C. Carlin, Dyersburg, Tenn., and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Mittendorf Funeral Home in Champaign with Rev. Merle Stronhehn conducting services. Rev. Strohbehn is associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Champaign. The body will be taken to Darlington, where interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery. Masonic rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at graveside by members of the Darlington Masonic Lodge. - kbz
