THORNTOWN— Mrs. Mollie J. Flaningam, 103, a resident of this neighborhood the last 81 years, died at 6 p.m. Friday in Witham Hospital at Lebanon. Her condition had become critical Tuesday. Mrs. Flaningam, who lived in Thorntown since 1921 and prior to that on a farm five and a half miles west of here since her marriage March 3, 1887, maintained an active interest in current events and was a newspaper reader to her last days. She kept busy knitting until two weeks ago. She was a daughter of George Washington and Elnora Heavenridge Ward and was born May 10, 1865 in Union County, Indiana. Her husband, Samuel Flaningam, died in 1940. Mrs. Flaningam was a member of the Thorntown Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include a son, Ward of Darlington; two daughters, Mrs. Orville Deck of Rt. 1, Darlington, and Miss Ruth Flaningam of Thorntown; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and two half-sisters, Miss Bess Ward of Richmond and Mrs. Dwight Himelick of Bath, Ind. A son, Walter, died in 1931 and several brothers and sisters preceded Mrs. Flaningam in death. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Monday at Russell and Hitch Funeral Home in Thorntown, with Rev. Philip D. Queen officiating and interment in Lutheran Cemetery at Darlington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Sunday.
