Charles Finch, master carpenter of the Van, lost his life in a hotel fire at Logansport, Sunday. He had a room in the fifth story of the Burnett House. In descending by means of a rope he lost his hold and fell three stories. In his fall he struck a woman and broke her back. Mr. Finch had occupied the same room for 15 years, and had frequently told just what he would do in case of fire. He was well known here, having begun at the bottom and worked up to his present position. He was 70 years old. -- typed by kbz

Charles Finch, master carpenter of the Vandalia Railway who met death in the Barnett Hotel fire at Logansport Sunday was a former resident of Crawfordsville and is well remembered by many of our citizens. He has been with the Vandalia since it was first built and when he reached here boarded at the Junction house, a popular hosteiry of 40 years ago. Mr. Finch started to descend on a rope from a fourth story window. When 50’ from the ground he let loose the rope and his neck was broken in the fall. – kbz
