"McBrayer Blood" -- Fred Farmer, my nephew who visited me last spring a year ago, was killed in action in France on July 7. He had been in the American Army for about 18 years and had been stationed in Hawaii, Panama and other of ompossessions (?). He was a staff sargeant and came back to the states for additional training at which time he visited Waveland. While here for training, he married Miss Ruth Caldwell daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Caldwell of Chicago formerly of Indianapolis. That leaves three nephews in the service: Major Ben McBrayer in Alaska; Ensign Charles R. Burt of the So. Seas and Pilot John McBrayer in training in Texas. We have a proud pain for this boy who gave his life for his country, yet he kept alive the McBrayer Tradition, "This country can not have a war without the spilling of McBrayer blood." John McCrae's poem has new meaning to me: "Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw; The torch, be yours to hold it high if ye break faith with us who did, we shall not sleep tho poppies grow in Flander's Field." -- kbz
