Dr. Hardlaw Ewell, owner of Ben Hur Sanitarium expired as the institution at 9:40 o’clock Sunday morning after an extended illness. Dr. Ewell suffered a stroke of paralysis one month ago and has been confined in his bed since that time. He was 72 years old. Born in Templeton, Md on May 16, 1866, Dr. Ewell was the son of Dr. George Ross and Ann Augusta Wardlaw Ewell. His father had served with the Chesapeake artillery during the Civil War. Dr. Ewell came to this city from Richland, Iowa where he had practiced for seven years, 26 years ago and immediately became affiliated with the Ben Hur Saniitarium located at 908 East Main Street. He was reared in Georgia and in 1891 he was graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine in Louisville, Ky. Mr. Ewell was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and belonged to the Elks Lodge. Surviving are one son, Sheldon Ewell of Attica and two sisters, Mrs. Hugo Hammick of Blakely, GA and Mrs. Edna Earl Gibson of Centralia, PA. Funeral services will be held at St. Bernard’s Church at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning. Interment will be made at Oak Hill Cemetery. - kbz

Impressive funeral services were held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church Tuesday morning for Dr. Wardlaw Ewell, owner of the Ben Hur sanitarium who died at his home here after an extended illness. The Rev. JC Keating pastor of St. Bernard’s officiated at the funeral mass and burial was made at Oak Hill cemetery. Assisting as pall bearers were Dr. John L. Sharp, Pat Penneyfeather, Ben Myers and JJ Moloney of this city and Lloyd Shaffer and Charles Richey of Attica. A graduate of the Louisville medical school in 1891, Dr. Ewell had practiced medicine in George and Iowa before coming to Crawfordsville. He was born at Templeton, Md and was 72 years old. Stricken at the sanitarium here, Dr. Ewell died at 9 o’clock Sunday morning.- kbz

He was stricken with a stroke of paralysis a month ago and had been confined to his bed since that time. Dr. Ewell was born in Templeton, Maryland May 16, 1866. He came to Crawfordsville 26 years ago and since that time has been afilliated with the Ben Hur sanitarium. He was a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and belonged to the Elks Lodge.
