Paul T. Everson, 68, a part-time employee of the Crawfordsville Public Library, died Friday morning at Culver Hospital of injuries suffered in a fall Thursday afternoon outside the library. Everson was on the north side of the library near a stairway leading to the building's basement when the accident occurred. He had been washing windows during the afternoon and was found at the base of a ladder leading to windows on the building's main floor. No one saw the accident occur. Two employees of Herman Davis Inc., who wee working in the building next door to the library heard Everson's cries for help about 3:30 p.m. One of the two, Ray Shepherd, a custodian for the automobile firm, looked out a window and saw Everson. Shepherd rushed to help him, then called an ambulance and Everson was taken to the hospital. The hospital reported that Everson had a crushed pelvis, a broken wrist and a head concussion. Shepherd said that the elderly man appeared to have fallen from the ladder and landed on concrete steps and walk. Everson is a former employee of R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., where he was a receiving clerk from August 1942 to his retirement in June 1959. Everson started working at the library part-time in in January 1960. He also worked for towns-people as a gardener and maintenance man. "He just love to be busy", one of his employers at the library said. "He would come in to work at the library whenever our regular janitor was unable to be here or had an extra amount of work to do".
Everson was born March 12, 1893, west of Ladoga. He was the son of John and Laura Lester Everson. He married Caretta B. Easley Feb. 15, 1914, at her home in New Market. A graduate of Ladoga High School, Everson started farming west of Ladoga when he and his wife began housekeeping. They moved to Crawfordsville in March 1942 when he went to work for Donnelleys. Everson was a member of First Christian Church of Crawfordsville, and of the Modern Woodmen of America Lodge. His hobby was gardening and he specialized in raising asters and chrysanthemums. He lived at 311 E. Jefferson St., with his wife. Survivors include the wife; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn J. Carlile and Mrs. William A. Surface, both of Crawfordsville; a grandson, Robert A. Smiley Jr., a student at Purdue University; two granddaughters, Carolyn Surface, a student at the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, and Marilyn Surface, a pupil at Tuttle Junior High School; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Cain of Darlington, and two brothers, Frantz Everson of Bloomingdale and Glen Everson of New Castle. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Smiley, in September 1956. Her husband, Robert A . Smiley, lives in Crawfordsville. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Mrs. Clara Terry and Mrs. Blanche Cochran. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home. Rev. Paul A. Million, pastor of First Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday.- thanks, Sue :)
