LEBANON – The funeral for Mrs. Nellie Maye Evans, 71, of Lebanon, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Russell & Hitch Funeral Home. The Boone County coroner attributed death to smoke inhalation in a fire in her home which gutted the kitchen. Lebanon police had been called to investigate a report of a burglar in the neighborhood, saw the smoke and called the fire department and rescue unit. Patrolman Pat Doolan of the Lebanon Police said Mrs. Evans was found face down in a bathtub with a pillow over her head and a flashlight clutched in her hand. She had apparently tried to flee the fire, became confused and was trapped in the bathroom. Lt. Jim Stevenson of the Lebanon Fire Department said that no cause for the fire had been determined and no damage estimate had been made. Born Aug. 14, 1904, at Granger, Tenn., she was a daughter of Arthur R. and Nancy Wolfenbarger Lively. She married James Robert Evans on Dec. 24. 1934, at North Salem. He died Aug. 29, 1967. Mrs. Evans attended school at Stilesville and lived at Thorntown before moving to Lebanon 20 years ago. She had also lived in the Clayton and Amo communities, working for the Clayton Telephone Co. for several years. She was a member of Twelve Thimble Club and attended Walnut Street Baptist Church. Surviving are a nephew, Lewis Ray Clawson of Thorntown, who was reared in the Evans home from the age of nine days; three brothers, Lincoln Lively of Jamestown, Lloyd Lively of Roachdale and Herman Lively of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two sisters, Mrs. Katie Roe of Bainbridge and Mrs. Ida Stevens of Morton. Two children, two brothers and a sister are deceased. Burial will be in Clayton Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. – jlr
