The first gloom caused the death of one of Montgomery County’s enlisted men settled today following the telegram received this morning announcing the death of Aetna Elmore of San Antonio, Texas. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Elmore of New Richmond, and had been sick only a few days with pneumonia. It was not until the last of last week that his parents were informed of the lad’s serious condition and the subsequent death came as a severe shock to his family and friends. The youthful soldier had enlisted his services only 8 weeks ago with a Benton County unit. He was serving as an enlisted carpenter. At the time of his enlistment he was only 18 years old, having turned 19 just last Saturday, January 19. Prior to his enlistment he was engaged in farming. Besides his parents, young Elmore is survived by 3 brothers: Sherman, Glenn and Garland. He died at the camp hospital Sunday and the telegram of his death reached the parents this morning (Monday). The government is shipping the body home, but until it reaches St. Louis it is not known when the remains will reach here. Funeral arrangements will then be announced. - transcribed by kbz
