Waynetown, Sept 6 - John Ellis, a veteran of the Civil War and a life long resident of this town died at his home here Tuesday afternoon after a long illness. He had been in ill health for some time past and for a week past it could be seen that the end was near. A complication of paralysis and other diseases caused death. Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Benson of Terre Haute and bureial will be made in the local cemetery. Mr. Ellis was born in this state and at the age of 16 years enlisted in the Union Army as a drummer boy. The hardships of the four years' campaign undermined his health and he has never been a robust man. After the war he returned here and engaged in the building moving until a few years ago when he retired. He is survived by a widow and two daughters, Blanche and Nellie. Waynetown Sept 6 - Tuesday noon at his home on East Main Street occurred the death of John N., Ellis, in his 65th year after an illness that confined him to his home most of the time for the past year. Johnnie Ellis as he was called by every one was born Oct 14, 1846, the youngest of Boaz and Sarah Ellis. Besides the wife, who was Miss Laura Little, he leaves two grown daughters, Misses Blanche and Nellie; also one brother, Israel Ellis, living here and one sister, Mrs. Foster Fields, living at East Oakland, Calif. His father was one of Wayne Township's pioneers and his mother, Sarah Nelson. When he was 15 years of age he with Job Westfall of New Richmond enlisted in the Civil War as musicians, drummer and fifer respectively, and served with distinction and honor through the war of the rebellion, belonging to the 6 3rd Indiana Regiment of which his older brother, William was also a member. His brother Israel was also a soldier. When the war was over he returned to Waynetown and with the exception of a few years in Attica has always been a resident of this township. Until the last 3 years he has always with his comrade, Job Westfall, attended all soldiers' reunions within reach, whether it was his own regiment or not, and furnished the martial music for the occasion. This gave him a very extended acquaintance. He has been a member of the IOOF Lodge here for a number of years and they will have charge of the funeral which will occur Thursday afternoon at the home at 2 o'clock. Rev. John G.
