Mrs. Martha J. Elliot of Bickness (Bicknell?) fell over a cliff at the Shades on Mon afternoon suffering injuries from which she died in about an hour. Mrs. Elliot came with a party of friends on Sun morning to spend a fortnight at the Shades. They occupied one of the cottages on the ridge E. of the hotel. Mrs. Elliot had complained of dizziness, but had started down the path that leads down into the gulch on the E. of the main path to the springs. She was seen to fall to the ground which is steeply inclined and from there to roll to the bottom of the gulch. It is possible that she suffered a paralytic seizure but of course this will never be known. When assistance reached her she was unconscious. A cot was brought and she was carried to the hotel where she d. about 3 o'clock without regaining consciousness. Her right arm was broken just below her shoulder and she had suffered minor bruises and scratches but the fatal injury was to the base of the skull which was probably fractured. No relatives were in the party, so a message was sent to her husband, George Elliot, who with his daughter, arrived here about 9 o'clock. The local undertaker took charge of the remains which were taken to Crawfordsville about midnight the party leaving from there for Bickness on Tues. morning. Mrs. Elliott was 68 years old. The other members of the party were Mrs. Martha Munstermann of Vincennes and Mrs Lillie Grammar and daughter, Miss Elsie of Terre Haute.
