Roachdale, Aug. 16 -- John Thomas Edwards, 94, first cashier of the Roachdale bank and a former county official, died at 1 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Radford, two miles northwest of here. He had been in failing health for some time but had been seriously ill only the past week. His death was attributed to the infirmities of old age.
Mr. Edwards was born in Putnam county, June 9, 1843, a son of Glasco and Nancy Lafollette, one of the early pioneer families of this county. He spent his early life on a farm near here, moving to Roachdale in 1892.
He was employed at the Roachdale bank as cashier and served as Putnam county treasurer for one four-year term. Later he was in the clothing business here.
Mr. Edwards married Lydia Jane Sutherlin in July, 1865. He was a member of the Masonic order.
Surviving, in addition to the daughter at whose home he expired, are one son, James F. Edwards, Indianapolis; one sister, Mrs. Man Smith, Roachdale; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Chastain funeral home here in charge of Rev. S. L. Airhart of New Market. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and night and Wednesday morning. Burial will be made in Roachdale Cemetery.
