Governor Crittenden Durham, the third son of Jesse Youce and Martha Tarkington Durham, was born in Mercer County near Perryville, Ky. April 12, 1848. At the very tender age of two he moved with his parents to the home on the farm 2 miles north of Waveland, Ind where his parents lived the remainder of their lives. This, too was where he made his home until four years ago, when his father died. His mother passed into the glorious home above many years ago. His education was such as was obtained at the Waveland Presbyterian Academy of which the venerable Prof. Henry S. Kritz now of Waveland was its principal. After completing his studies at this institution he engaged in agricultural pursuit as his life chosen occupation. For nearly 20 years he was a sufferer from a complication of diseases, which suddenly terminated his life Wednesday evening Nov 15 at 8 o’clock at the age 63 years 7 months and 8 days. He was a most kind and devoted son and brother, and one who had a good word of cheer and a kindly greeting for all with whom he came in contact. Early in his life he united with the ME Church of Waveland. This was in keeping with the training of his Christian mother, who was a devout member of the ME Church for over 40 years. For 39 years he was a member of the Masonic Order, having attained the 30-second degree a member of Scottish Rite, prominent in Indiana. The funeral occurred at the ME Church at Waveland Friday at 10:30 am. Conducted by Rev. WH Fertich, DD of Crawfordsville, using as his text Job 14:14 assisted by the Order of Masons. On account of the inclemency of the weather all of the services were held in the church, after which the remains were buried in Waveland cemetery by the side of his father and mother. The deceased is survived by 5 brothers and one sister all of whom were present. They are: Dr. John Lawson Durham, Sullivan, Ind; George Tarkington Durham, Waveland, Laura D. Rue, Danville, Ky; Joseph Pinckney Durham, Indianapolis; Joshua Bell Durham, Graysville, Ind; William Youce Durham, Waveland. Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. John Durham, Jamestown, Ind; Mr. George Carver and John Amos Johnson of Crawfordsville. Many friends from neighboring towns and vicinity who with hosts of other relatives and friends, united with the family in mourning the loss of his departure. - kbz
