Alexander Duncan died last night from total paralysis at his home on South Washington Street. He was stricken during the summer and his decline has been gradual. The deceased was born August 7, 1837 in Highland County, Ohio and came with his parents to Indiana in an early day. They moved to Missouri but returned shortly and took up their abode at Pleasant Hill, where Mr. Duncan grew to manhood. Mr. Duncan was married to Nancy J. Ashenhurst and four sons blessed the union, Edward, Frank, Archie and John. The first named died in infancy but the others survive. The deceased enlisted for war from this county Nov 8, 1863 and was mustered into the service at Lafayette. He was a private in Co B 120th Ind volunteers but later became a Sergeant. His regiment was assigned to the 23rd Army Corps of the Department of Ohio and few divisions saw more or harder service. Mr. Duncan participated in no less than 12 great engagements, notably Rocky Face Ridge, GA; Kenesaw Mountain; Seige of Atlanta, Lovejoy, Columbus, Franklin, Nashville and Kenston, NC. Mr. Duncan distinguished himself many times and was discharged with all the honors of war Jan 9, 1866. During the service his regiment lost 160 men in action. After the war he removed to Naylor County, Iowa, returning to this city in 1870. Four years later he returned to Iowa and there remained until 1883, when he went to Douglass County, Dakota where he took an active part in the development of that new country. He served there several terms on the board of county commissioners. In 1891 he decided to return to Crawfordsville and has been an honored resident ever since. He was a member of the First ME Church and belonged to McPherson Post GAR and Masonic fraternity. Both these organizations will have a part in the funeral. Mr. Duncan was a friend of everyone and faithful to every trust. He was a loving husband and father and a good citizen. The funeral will take place at the family residence at 2 p.m. Sunday Rev Goss officiating.

Alex Duncan one of our prominent residents and former city street commissioner died on Friday morning at 2:30 o’clock. He had been sick for some weeks and had not eaten a bit nor swallowed a drop for a week propr to his death. The funeral will be conducted by Revs. Goff and Runyan this afternoon at 2 o’clock and he will be buried by the Masons and GAR. – kbz
