Willard Parker Dunbar Sr, 63, Rt 1, Colfax, prominent Montgomery County farmer, died Tuesday in a Logansport hospital. Mr. Dunbar was the son of E. Dunbar and Emma Parker Dunbar. He married Irma Dykes in 1925. Survivors include the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Jean Socolowski of Denville, NJ; three sons, Willard Parker Dunbar Jr, at home; Samuel Dunbar of Akron, Ohio and Lt. Peter Dunbar of Corpus Christi, Tex.; three brothers, J.E. Dunbar of Colfax, Austin Dunbar of Jamestown and T. B. Dunbar of Charleston, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. M.S. Judy of Charleston W.Va. and Mrs. L.V. Halladay of Coshocton, Ohio; a granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey and Roscoe Dunbar. Mr. Dunbar entered the farming business in 1931 after having distinguished himself as a teacher, athletic coach, boxing champion and expert rifleman. A veteran of World War I and a member of the William Alexander Fleet Post 103 of the American Legion at Culver, Mrs. Dunbar became a teacher and coach in 1922 at Culver Military Academy where he served as a member of the faulty nine years. During this period he taught mathematics and coached football and basketball. Mr. Dunbar was a member of the Thorntown Presbyterian Church and the Culver Masonic Lodge. He also was a former commander and former adjutant of the Culver Legion Post. As an expert rifleman, Mr. Dunbar served on both the Indiana civilian rifle team and the U.S. Army Reserve Corps rifle team. In the 1920s he was cited by the U.S. War Department for his outstanding marksmanship. Mr. Dunbar also was a district and regional officer of the Army Reserve Corps in Indiana. In addition he also was assistant coach of the U. S. International championship rifle and pistol teams. Mr Dunbar was the welter-weight champion of the AAU in Indiana and Kentucky in 1925. Since 1931 when he took up farming Mr. Dunbar had engaged chiefly in cattle raising. Herds developed by Mr. Dunbar brought visitors to his farm on numerous occasions. Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Friday in the Bright Funeral Home at Darlington. Rev. A.L. Vermilion will be the officiating minister. Burial will be at Darlington Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Thursday.
