Mrs. Nathanial Dowden died at her home near Freedom on Tuesday evening. The funeral services were held at the home and were conducted by Rev. JH Oliphant, yesterday morning. The body was interred at the Presbyterian cem, here. Death was the result of a cancerous growth in the throat. Samantha Chamberlain, daughter of Joseph and Nancy Chamberlain was b. in Hudson, Summit Co, Oh ioSept 7, 1828. She was the last survivor of 8 children. She married Noyes Lewis at Cooperstown NY in 1846. To them were born 7 children, of whom only two remain. Mrs. H.H. Mercer of Albia, Iowa; and Mrs. JH Vandever of Crawfordsville. This union was broken by the death of the husband, Dec. 20, 1887. She married Nathanial Dowden Oct 9, 1892. He survives her, but is quite feeble and will soon follow. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Waveland for many years. Her two daughters were with her during her last illness, and no one could have been more faithful and attentive. Every wish of their mother that was in their power was granted her. Her old and feeble husband was an anxious waiter about the sickbed but his fond hope of her recovery was blighted. Truly, a kind companion, a devoted mother, a good neighbor has been taken from us, but we believe that our loss is her great gain. Her affliction was great and her suffering intense, yet she never murmured or complained. To see her manifest such sweet submissive Christian spirit is a great comfort to her bereaved friends.
