DOWDEN, Nathaniel - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Nathaniel Dowden, one of the oldest settlers in the County, died at his home near Dowden's school house in Brown township, twelve miles southwest of this city Saturday morning at 9 a.m. He was one of the pioneers and at one time one of the substantial citizens of that township. He had reached the advanced age of eighty-four years his death resulting from senility. In the early days he was one of the robust, hearty farmers that blazed the way out of the wilderness for the present generation. He settled on the farm where he died and never at any time left it. He was thrice married but none of the wives survive him. Four boys, Rev. James Dowden of Yeddo; John Dowden, of Indianapolis; George Dowden and Abijah Dowden, of this County, and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Furr, of Fountain County, still survive. His funeral will occur at Freedom Church in Brown township at 10 o'clock Tuesday." Submitter's Note: This obit, like almost all others has a mistake. His daughter was Sarah Smith. She lived in Alamo at the time of her father's death. Nathaniel died of uremia too, besides old age. He was born August 20, 1821 in Shelby County, KY to James Dowden and Roxannah Layne. He first married Theadocia Ann Bayless on October 21, 1841 in Montgomery County. She was the mother of his children. Later in life he married Nancy A. Runyan on October 09, 1881 in Montgomery County. He thirdly married Samantha Lewis on October 19, 1893 in Montgomery County.
