DOOLEY, Rufus L. (Dr) - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

Marshall, [Indiana] January 28. Relatives here have received word of the death of Dr. R.L. Dooley of Montezuma [Indiana]. Dr. Dooley, who was 75 years of age, was reared in this community, and has been a physician at Montezuma for a number of years.

Montezuma is getting to be a favorite stamping ground for kidnappers. The last victim is Dr. Rufus DOOLEY, well known here. He was taken from his home about midnight on Friday night robbed of money and jewelry and left bound in a field a mile and half south of town with the injunction to not raise an alarm for 20 minutes. It happened that the town marshall saw the abductors but too late to stop them. He fired one shot which was found to have gone through a fender on the doctor's car which the kidnappers were using for their get away. The car was found later but no trace of the kidnappers. It will be remembered that William Montgomery of the Montezuma bank was held captive in his home a few weeks ago in an attempt to make him open the bank vault. Three Terre Haute people, Louise Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Clay Pearman are under arrest on suspicion. They also are thought to have been concerned in the Montgomery case.
