Paul L. DeVerter, 82, Baytown, Tex. formerly of Crawfordsville, died Saturday in his home. Mr. DeVerter was a director for the Baytown Kiwanis Club and past president of the Baytown Shrine Club. He was retired from Exxon's Baytown Refinery where he had served as manager of the inspection laboratory. Mr. DeVerter served in the Army on the Mexican border in 1916 and 1917 and in France with the AEF as commander of Company D, 104th Infantry, 26th Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He retired as a major. Born at Waterman, in 1894, he was one of five children of Dr. and Mrs. George T. DeVerter. The family moved to Crawfordsville where they lived on Washington St., during DeVerter's youth. He was graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1911, received an AB degree from Wabash College in 1915 and a MA degree in chemistry from University of Wisconsin in 1916. Surviving are his wife, Ruth of Baytown; two sons, Paul of Houston, Tex. and John of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were conducted in St. Marks United Methodist Church at Baytown. Burial was in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. The family requests any donations be made to favorite charities.--waw
