Michael F. Devan died Friday a.m. June 6, aged twenty seven years. (*previous states 24 years). He was born in Jamestown, Boone County. His early life was spent in Montgomery County on a farm, but for the past eight years he has been a resident of Crawfordsville. During this time he was employed as salesman in Yeagley & McClamrock’s shoe store, and attended St. Viateur’s College some three years. Failing health required him to abandon his studies, and under the advice of a physician he spent the witners of ’88 and ’89 in New Mexico, being flattered with the climate, he returned the following June, accompanied by a sister, Mary, but not being benefited he soon came home. For the past six months he has been an invalid and a most patient sufferer, and died fully resigned to the will of his creator, and fortified by all the sacraments of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. As a boy and as a man, the deceased was a devout Christian, a faithful son, a devoted brother, and a cheerful companion.

At St. Bernard’s Church at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon was assembled a large concourse of sympathizing friends to pay respects to the mortal remains of M. F. Devan. Rev. J. R. Dinnen preached an eloquent and appropriate sermon, taking as his text, “Remember thy Creator in the Days of thy Youth.” He showed how applicable the words were to the deceased, who was not only a Catholic in name, but in practice, he having served God in his youth as well as in the time of affliction. The remains were followed to the grave by one of the largest processions that ever wended its way to Calvary Cemetery. The pall bearers were members of the Catholic Legion from Lafayette, the deceased being a member of that society. They were preceded by some of his associated bearing floral tributes.
