Detchon - Martha Agnew

Crawfordsville June 9 - Mrs. Martha Agnew Detchon, widow of Dr. Elliott Detchon, a pioneer woman, is dead at her home in this city, age 79 years. Mrs. Detchon was born in Rockville Dec 20, 1828, the daughter of Mr. and mrs. Gibson Agnew, who emigrated to this state form Pennsylvania in 1827. Mrs. Detchon was married to Dr. Detchon at Rockville July 4, 1848 and in 1853 they removed to Montgomery County. He was for years one of the city's leading physicians. Ten years ago they observed their golden wedding anniversary. Dr. Detch died in 1905. They had six children, five living - Dr. LA Detchon; Mrs. William M. White; Mrs. Dr. FB Gonzales and Mrs. CF McIntire, Crawfordsville and Seymour O. Detchon, Chicago, Mrs. Emma Garver died in California two years ago. Mrs. Detchon also leaves six brothers and two sisters, all of whom are well advanced in years - David Agnew, Wilton Junction, Iowa; George Agnew, Central City, Neb; Smith Agnew, John Agnew and William Agnew, Fullerton, Neb; Irwin Agnew, Pendleton, Ore; Mrs. Albert Smith, Tipton, Iowa; and Mrs. ELiza Simison, Romney. Mrs. Detchon was a cousin of Dr. D. Hayes Agnew, the famous surgeon, who attended the bedside of President Garfield after he was shot by Guiteau. The Rev. BL Agnew, secretary of the Preachers' Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church of the US was also a cousin of Mrs. Detchon - kbz
