Derrickson - Matilda

This is from findagrave

Matilda Derrickson, wife of Charles Derrickson died at the family home five miles west of Thorntown, IN, March 25 1906. The funeral took place from the residence conducted by Rev. C.W. Sims Pastor of the A.M.E. church, assisted by Enos Kendall, who has been acquainted with the deceased for more than half a century.

Matilda was born in Nicholas County KY, Dec 25, 1816. She was born of slave parents, Benjamin and Allie Stout, but by reason of some custom of the slavery days she acquired the name of Thomas and she was known as Matilda Thomas, before she was married to Charles Derrickson the year 1838 or 39 in Indianapolis, IN.

Charles Derrickson the husband purchased his freedom. He had formed an attachment to Matilda and he undertook to purchase her freedom, which he did after a time, paying for her the sum of $500, a fabulous sum in those days. To this marriage 16 children were born of whom but four now survive. (Her husband's obit states they had 12 children, maybe four died at birth).
With her husband the deceased came to Indiana in 1856 and they resided here in Boone Co., continuously since. Years ago she was recognized as a very industrious woman, and has frequently been seen in the fields in her effort to assist her husband in securing a home. But for a number of years she had been afflicted with rheumatism and was not able to work.

All her life she was recognized as a good woman, striving at all times to do right, and at her funeral, MR. Kendall paid a tribute to her worth in a short talk in which he briefly reviewed her life for the past 40 years. In 1866 she united with the United Bretheren church and her walk in life had been an evidence of the sincerity of the faith she possessed.

Through the pastor, the A.M.E. church extends sympathy to the husband and bereaved relatives.
