Howard I. Demaree, son of John and Hulda Budd Demaree was born on a farm near Waveland, Indiana, August 31, 1851. Here he grew to manhood and was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Campbell, and to this union six children were born, two sons and four daughters. His first wife passed away in 1890, and he was later united to Margaret Fitzgerald, and to this union one child was born. Soon after his first marriage he and his wife began housekeeping on a farm near where he was born, later moving to the farm where he spent the remainder of his days. Many years ago he united with the Presbyterian Church at Waveland and continued as a member of that church until the end. Many years ago he was made a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge of Waveland, and later a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine of Indianapolis. He had served in an official capacity of assessor of his township, and as a member of the County Council of Parke County. He also represented the counties of Fountain and Parke in the Indiana Legislature of 1918 and 1919, being elected to that responsible position as a joint representative from the two counties. He had been ill since the first of the year and seriously ill for the past few weeks, and while all was done for him that could be done, yet it was without avail for in the morning hours of Monday, November 24th, he passed quietly away at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 24 days, leaving to mourn a wife, two sons, John of near Waveland, Samuel of Ashbury Park, New Jersey; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Canine of Danville, Ind.; and Miss Dorothy who resides at home; three grandchildren, two brothers, David and Charles Demaree of Crawfordsville; other relatives and a host of friends. Truly he was a good man and will be much missed by his family, relatives, neighbors and friends. He has paid the price that all must pay. He has gone unto his reward, and may peace be unto his departed soul. Jesus, while our hearts are bleeding, O'er the spoils that death has won. We would at this solemn meeting, calmly say "Thy will be done." - kbz
