We are called upon again this week, to chronicle the death of still another of our most highly esteemed citizens – a man whom we have known intimately since his coming among us, some 19 years ago – George H. DEIGHTON. He died from consumption on Thursday last, Dec 11th, 1873. A reference of the old family record shows that the subject of this brief sketch, was born near Weatherby, “old” England, on Wednesday May 3d 1831, making him at the time of his death, 42 years 6 months 8 days old. Mr. Deighton although he had been the recipient of the ordinance of baptism in his early childhood, while in the land of his nativity, yet he properly claimed no church connection: and – as far as is known trusted the future happiness of the immortal part of man to a “doing of the work,” to a straight-forward, upright life – the life of true manhood. Endowed as he was by nature, with a more than ordinary degree of regard for truth, and honesty of purpose: coupled with a sympathetic benevolence, the emanators alone of a philanthropic heart, he went forth into the world to do and to die; submitting his case without a murmur, to the keeping of a just and merciful Creator. Though not professedly a Christian – as the word is applied in connection with the church – yet we can but feel that the life of the lamented is worthy of all emulation, even by those of the most orthodox faith. The deceased leaves a beloved wife and a son of some 13 years, to mourn his early demise, a loss which can never be restored to them. May she be lifted above her sorrows; and this boy, who hears the name of the father, fully realize his loss, and remember, though dead, that he who loved and cared for him here, still speaks, warning him against vice and immorality in all their hideous phases. The funeral took place at the Methodist Episocopal Church on Sabbath last, at 10 ½ o’clock, Rev. S Beck, officiating. The remains were interred in Masonic Cemetery. – transcribed by kbz

After a long struggle with that relentless foe, consumption, George H. Deighton died at his residence in this city last Thursday morning, December 11.

Deceased was a native of England, where he was born May 3, 1831. His father was a minister in the Church of England and had the infant son baptized in that church. Deceased came to this place and went into business some 19 years ago. He was long a member of the firm of Doherty & Deighton, carriage manufacturers. During his connection with the firm he became widely known to the citizens of Montgomery and adjoining counties, and was universally held in high esteem for his industry and honesty in business and for his personal modesty and general worth. He disposed of his interest in the carriage factory some two years ago and has since devoted his time to the settlement of private affairs and to a vain effort to restore his lost health.

During his affliction, which lasted for several years, though he found it impossible to be always cheerful, he was always uncomplaining. Up to the last moments of his life he was extremely solicitous of the welfare and comfort of his family. He leaves a wife and one child. The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church Sunday morning, Rev. S. Beck officiating. The remains were interred in the Masonic Cemetery.
