Hugh DeWITT a member of the Lafayette Soldier's home, aged 87, a Vet. of the Mexican War, has prepared his own grave in the Battle Ground Cemetery. He has purchased a lot, dug the grave, walled it with brick and covered the opening with a slab, over which earth is thrown, awaiting the final summons of its owner. At the grave stands a white marble shaft 6' high. On this shaft the self-composed epitaph of DeWitt is engraves and reads: "Here lies beneath this sod, a bachelor who disobeyed the laws of God, I may advise to others give, Do not live a bach as I did live!" On the base of the shaft beneath is engraved the name of DeWitt and a record of his Mexican War service, with a blank date line for the death time. He has purchased his coffin and has stored it away in Battle Ground, where it will be convenient when he passes away (Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana Argus News) - typed by kbz
