Walter R (Lum) Cruse, 71 years old, who for half a century was identified with the printing industry of Crawfordsville died of a heart attack Friday morning at his home on east Market street. He had been afflicted with asthma for several years but was seriously ill only a short time. Born April 6, 1871 in Crawfordsville, the son of Thomas and Phoebe Cruse, pioneer Indiana couple, he was married to Daisy M. Coons in 1891. A year later he entered the printing industry and in 1896 received his printer's card. Active in newspaper work most of his life, Mr. Cruse was night foreman of the Journal-Review when he retired. His retirement occurred in 1940 and was caused by the condition of his health. Since then he had lived quietly at his home. A life resident of the city, Mr. Cruse had been a leader in the local typographical union for many years and held the oldest continuous membership in the local union. In April 1900 he entered the employ of the Journal. He had continuously been in the employ of the Journal, The Review and the combined Journal-Review until he retired. Mr. Cruse attended the Crawfordsville HS and Wabash College and was a member of the Methodist Church. Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Roy Edwards and Mrs. Frank Holland, both of Crawfordsville; a sister, Miss Lulu Cruse; five grandchildren, Frederick, Robert, Merle and Jack Cross and Marjorie Ann Edwards and a great grandson, Freddie Cruse. He was preceded in death by two sons, Fred and Edward Cruse. The body was taken to the Proffitt & Sons Funeral Home and later removed to the family residence where friends may pay their respects until noon Sunday when the body will be returned to the funeral parlors. Services will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at Proffitt & Sons with the Rev. Allen B. Rice of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery. - kbz
