Mrs. Mary O. (Note from typist Karen Zach: Robertson, daughter of Allen and Elizabeth Spencer Robertson) Crooks died Monday night, Feb 24, at the home of her son, Elmer E. Crooks three miles southwest of Waveland. She has been suffering seriously for two or three years with a complication of diseases, which recently came near causing death. On Monday afternoon, however, she was feeling better than usual, but aobut 10 o'clock as she started to retire, she staggered and fell on the bed, dying in a few moments. She was 77. Her birthplace was Fleming County, Kentucky. When a small child she moved with her parents to a farm near Waveland. On Dec 24, 1854, she was united in marriage with Joseph A. Crooks, who died April 20, 1867. After their marriage they went to Putnam County but soon returned to the farm where both lived the remainder of their lives. They were the parents of four children: Wm. A. Crooks, deceased, James W. Crooks of Washington City; Elmer E. Crooks and Mrs. Mary E. McCampbell of marshall. The deceased was survived by a brother, Zachary Robertson of Waveland and two sisters, Mrs. Mariah Bilblo who resides in Iowa and Mrs. Martha Ellen Holliday Holliday, a resident of Illinois. Mrs. Crooks was a devoted Christian lady. When a girl, she united with the Presbyterian Church in Waveland but after her marriage transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which church her husband was a member. So faithful was she to the church that in her younger days she would walk from her home to the church services which were 3 miles away. Her Christian life was considered to be exemplary and she was held in high esteem in the community where she lived most of her life. It was her joy in her last days of suffering to say, "The Lord's will be done." She was ready for the expected summons. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church on Thursday forenoon, the pastor, Rev. AW Smith officiating. Interment at Maple Ridge. - kbz
