Wingate - Herbert William Crane, 55, died at his home in Wingate shortly before midnight Monday. In ill health and confirmed to a wheel chair for 10 years, Mr. Crane had been bedfast for the past three years. Born Dec. 24, 1899, in Wingate, Mr. Crane was the son of Morris S. and Maude Cooper Crane. He was married Feb. 1, 1923, to Mae Rivers, at Danville, Ill. In Wingate High School, where he was graduated with the class of 1921, Mr. Crane was prominent in basketball. He played forward on the Wingate team which won national championship honors at the 1920 tournament in Chicago and that year he was named as a forward on the All-American high school basketball team. Wingate lost to Crawfordsville in the Tri-state championship played at Cincinnati, and then reversed the procedure and defeated the Athenians in the national tournament held later in Chicago. Mr. Crane also attended Wabash College following his graduation from high school. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity chapter at Wabash. He was a star forward on the Little Giant basketball team in the early 1920s. Mr. Crane served in World War I and was overseas with the American Army for a portion of his service. He held membership in the American Legion Post No. 174, of Wingate, and he was also a member of the Christian Church and the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Wingate. His illness dated back to his service in World War I. Mr. Crane is survived by his wife; a son, Herbert Crane Jr.; a granddaughter, Debra Crane, and his father and mother, all of Wingate, and two sisters, Mrs. Forest Crumley of Mellott, and Mrs. Glenn Wilson of Wingate. Since the Christian Church at Wingate is temporarily undergoing repairs, the funeral service will be held at the Wingate Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Thursday, in charge of Rev. Homer Hunsicker of Seymour, a former Christian Church pastor here. He will be assisted by the present Christian Church pastor, Rev. LeRoy Ronk. The body will lie in state at the Methodist Church one hour before the service Thursday afternoon. Friends may call at the residence after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Mr. Crane will be buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
