He was the son of David and Jemima Craig who were pioneer settlers of this county having settled here in 1822. William was reared in this county and at about the age of 20 came to this city and engaged in the grocery and bakery business in which he continued for several years. In 1859 Mr. Craig was united in marriage to Miss Mary Perkins and to them were born four children, two of whom died in infancy, the two remaining daughters reside in the west. In the year 1856 Mr and Mrs, Craig, united with the Christian church in this city. Soon after Mrs. Craig died leaving her husband and two little girls to mourn her loss. After this Mr. Craig removed to Chicago where he became a successful in professional life. He was well known over the country, especially among the stock men and highly respected by all. The funeral took place Thursday at 2 o'clock from the residence of W.H. Jackson on east Market street, conducted by Elder Shuey. The services were opened by a beautiful quartet of male voices. The scripture read was II Cor. 5-9. Quite a number of the old friends of the deceased were present, among them Gen. Manson, Hon M.D. White, Col. Heath, Samuel Austin and many others. Among the relatives present were Mrs. W.H. Jackson, of this city, and Miss Craig, of Chicago. Every effort to have the daughters present failed as they live in the far West and could not reach here in time. The friends and relatives desire to express their thanks for the respect and sympathy shown by the people of Crawfordsville in this time of sorrow. – kim h
