Susan Cathryn Hale was born in Ladoga, Indiana 4 Feb 1848 where she grew to young womanhood. In 1873 she was married to WB Craig who is left to mourn the loss of his companion with whom he had lived happily for nearly 42 years. In 1886 they came to Kansas to make their home and gathered about them a large number of warm friends. She was a member of the ME Church for 45 years and lived a faithful Christian life. She died at the home of Mrs. Dr. Ball in Ottawa Oct 6th where she was taken from the Ottawa Hospital after an operation to determine what her peculiar ailment was which proved to be cancer of the stomach and liver. When she learned there was no hope of recover, she said to her friends, “I am not afraid to die,” and with that assertion she pushed out into the shadows of the great unknown. All who knew her say she was a good woman gone to her reward. The funeral was held in the ME Church at Princeton last Friday conducted by the pastor, Rev. Pyles, the burial in the Princeton cemetery. The relatives, from a distance who attended the funeral were Joseph Hale of Ft. Collins Colo; John Hale of Topeca, brothers or Mrs. Craig and Clyde Morris and wife of Morland, Okla; Mr. Morris is a nephew of the deceased woman. Oliver LaFollette and wife and Mrs. Wallace LaFollette of Crawfordsville, Indiana, cousins of Mrs. Craig came to Ottawa Sunday morning to see her and of course were saddened to learn that her funeral took place on Friday. Mr. Craig went to Ottawa Monday to visit with them before they returned home. – kbz
