Robert A. Craig of Crawfordsville who committed suicide by hanging left a note which reads: “My conscience is clear. I choose death rather than life under existing circumstances.  I have never knowingly or intentionally wronged man, woman or child, although I have sinned mountains high. Yet I believe God will take care of my poor soul.  Dear children, forgive your father’s rash act for God knows I love you. I forgive everybody and wish them well.”

Robert A. Craig born 1 June 1832 Montgomery County son of Hugh and Lucy Craig died 30 July 1889 Darlington – wife Lydia – the children he talks to below would be Vincent; Alma; and Isaac. (their son, Marshall b/d 1853)

“Darlington News” - The largest crowd ever seen here at a funeral was the one at that of RA Craig. Long before the time for the funeral the sidewalk leading to the cemetery was covered with people. Six cabs, the hearse and several buggies came from Crawfordsville.  Mr. Craig was well known all around here and had many warm friends who were greatly surprised at his death.
