George W. COWAN, 81 died suddenly Thursday morning at his home here. Mr. Cowan's death was due to a heart attack. He had just completed his breakfast and was preparing a fire in the grate when death occurred. Mr. Cowan was born November 29, 1863 on the farm just north of town, the son of Aaron and Sarah Cowan, pioneer residents. He was graduated from the business school of Poughkeepsie, NY. May 5, 1887 he was married to Jessie Kritz, daughter of the late Professor and Mrs. H.S. Kritz. For many years, Mr. Cowan was engaged in the mercantile business here and in Yountsville with the late Tyre L. Hanna. He was also a traveling salesman for J.C. Capps, a clothing firm in Jackson, Ill. He had been retired for a number of years. He was a prominent and faithful member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cowan had long been prominent in Masony, having been a member of the Waveland Lodge and a 32nd degree Mason. He was also a member of the Shrine at Indianapolis and had a membership int he Columbia Club. He is survived by the widow and 5 nieces and one nephew. Funeral services will be held at the home at 2:30 Thursday afternoon with Rev. HD Trickey in charge, burial in Waveland Presbyterian Cemetery. - kbz
