Joseph W. Courtney, 44, comptroller and assistant administrator of Howard Community Hospital at Kokomo, died there shortly before 8 p.m. Friday after undergoing surgery early in the afternoon for a lung ailment. He moved with his family to Kokomo five years ago from Crawfordsville, where he was employed with Hoosier Crown Corp. Mr. Courtney was a native of Wichita, Kan., born Dec. 1, 1920. He was a son of Mrs. Myrtle Courtney and the late Bert Amos Courtney. He was a graduate of Muncie Central High School and Indiana University. He was a World War II veteran, serving four years with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He was married in Crawfordsville Sept. 1, 1947 to Virginia Zeller, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Gregg, Garry and Mark; two brothers, James of Wichita and John of New York City; an aunt, Mrs. Effie Whinery of Wichita, and the father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Zeller of Crawfordsville. A daughter, Jo Anne, is deceased. Mr. Courtney was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the American Legion. Funeral services are announced for 3:30 p.m. Monday at St. John Episcopal Church here with Rev. Cooper of Kokomo officiating. Interment will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Sunday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home.
