C. Floyd Cornell, Montgomery County assessor, died Sunday afternoon in St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minn. He had been in failing health the past year and seriously ill two weeks. He had served 28 1/2 years as assessor. He was first elected in 1934 and had been re-elected seven times since; including the 1962 general election, Mr. Cornell, 74, resided at 103 S. Walnut St. A native of Darlington, he was active in Republican politics and had been prominent in a number of civic affairs since moving to this city. He was a member and past president of the Lions Club. An active member of Trinity Methodist Church, he taught Sunday School for many years and was past president of the church board. He also was a member of Masonic Lodge at Darlington and Scottish Rite of Indianapolis. Born Jan, 26, 1889, he was the son of Allen and Virginia Cornell. He was twice married. His second marriage was to Louise Remley, who survives. Other survivors include a son, Dr. Robert Cornell of Crawfordsville, a daughter, Mrs. Forrest Newnum of Crawfordsville; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David. The body will be brought to Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Funeral rites for Floyd Cornell, Montgomery County assessor who died Sunday afternoon in St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minn., are announced for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Rev. Clarence Loveland and Rev. W. Goddard Sherman will officiate. Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery at Darlington. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Cornell, a native of Darlington, was married to Georgia Gambrel Nov. 22, 1911. She died April 3, 1945. He was wed July 21, 1957 to Louise Remley, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Dr. Robert Cornell, and a daughter, Mrs. Forrest Newnum, both of this city, and 10 grandchildren. A son, David, is deceased


Funeral services for Floyd Cornell were held Wednesday afternoon in the Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Loveland and Rev. Goddard Sherman officiating. Burial was on the family lot in the Darlington Odd Fellows Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers and assisting with the floral tributes were Earl Gardner, Howard Summer, Van Barteau, Glen McCullough, Lester Shewey and Buena Chaney. Selections were played on the organ by Mrs. O. C. Edwards. Mr. Cornell, county assessor for many years, died Sunday afternoon in Rochester, Minn.

Born at Darlington, he was active in Republican politics and prominent in a number of civic organizations since moving to Crawfordsville.  He was a member and past president of the Lions Club, a member of Trinity Methodist Church and taught a Sunday School class for a number of years. He also was a past chairman of the church board and member of the Masonic Lodge at Darlington and Scottish Rite at Indianapolis. Mr. Cornell’s second marriage was to Louise Remley, who survives with a son, Dr. Robert Cornell of Crawfordsville and a daughter, Mrs. Forest Newnum of Crawfordsville. - k
