Veedesrburg - William Coats, 71 years of age, died at his home near here Tuesday at 9 p.m. Death resulted from a heart ailment. He had been seriously ill for several months. He was a lifelong resident of the community and a prominent farmer. He was a member of the Veedersburg Christian Church.  Mr. Coats was born on Aug 24, 1879, the son of Charles and Olive Campbell Coats. He was married twice. First to Edna Glascock who passed away and later to Verita Stockdale who survives. Surviving besides the widow are five sons: Charles and Eugene of Indianapolis; Francis of Veedersburg; George of Danville and William of Waynetown; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Ray of Rochester and a brother, James Coats of Attica. Funeral services will be at the family home near Veedersburg Friday at 2 p.m. Rev CE Smith of Danville, Ill will be in charge of the services.  Burial will be in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown. - kbz

William COATS, 71, a prominent farmer of the Steam Corner neighborhood where he had spent his entire life died about 8:15 o’clock Tuesday night at his home. He had suffered a heart attack on Saturday and he had been under treatment by Dr. Byron Smith of Kingman for several months. He had seem to improve on Sunday but became worse Tuesday until he passed on that night. Mr. Coats was a member of a pioneer Fountain County farming family, the son of Charles P. and Sara Olive Campbell Coats. His father passed away in 1926 and his mother in 1935. His only brother is James A. Coats of Attica, formerly of Veedersburg.  Joseph William Coats, who was known as Willie to all his friends and neighbors, was born on his father’s farm on Aug 24, 1879.  He first was associated with his father and then farmed by himself. He was married to Vereta June Stockdale who survives with five sons and one daughter. The sons are Charles and Eugene of Indianapolis; Francis of Veedersburg; George of North Salem, Ind and William of Waynetown. The daughter is Mrs. Elizabeth Ray of Rochester. Mrs. Coats had two sisters, Mrs. Lela Hesler and Mrs. Ethel Jackson both whom preceded him in death. Mr. Coats was a citizen and farmer of high ideals devoted to the best principles in government and in agriculture. He was a member of the Scott’s Prairie Christian Church and of the Farm Bureau.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Friday) CST at the residence, conducted by Rev. CE Smith of Danville, Ill. Interment will take place in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery with J Fred Parham Funeral Home in charge. – k
