Mrs. Clara Van Cleave Coons, 77 years old, Crawfordsville, who served five terms in the Indiana House of Representatives, died yesterday in Culver Hospital here. A native of Montgomery County, she was its representative in 1941, 1943, 1945, 1947, and 1957. She was the widow of Merle Coons, who died in 1940 after serving in the Indiana House in 1935, 1937 and 1939. She was graduated, from New Market High School, and attended DePauw University. She taught music and art at Waynetown and Wingate before her marriage to Mr. Coons, who was principal at Wingate in 1914 when the school won the Indiana State High School basketball tournament Mrs. Coons was a member of the First Methodist Church, a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution, all of Crawfordsville, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and, the national and state Order of Women Legislators. She was a representative of the Webster Publishing Company, Webster Grove, Mo., school textbook publishers, from 1940 to 1955. Funeral services are pending at the Hunt Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Mrs. Clara VanCleave Coons, 77, who represented Montgomery County in the Indiana House of Representatives five terms, died at 7 p.m. Saturday in Culver Hospital. Mrs. Coons was elected to the General Assembly in 1942, 1943, 1945, 1947 and 1957. She was the widow of Merle Coons who was a representative in 1935, 1937 and 1939. He formerly served as county superintendent of schools. She was a graduate of New Market HS and attended DePauw University. She was a teacher of music and art at Waynetown and Wingate before her marriage. Mr. Coons was principal at Wingate when it won the state high school basketball tournament in 1914. Mrs. Coons was a member of the First Methodist Church, a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, the Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, national and state Orders of Women Legislators and the Arts and Crafts of Montgomery County Art League. From 1940 until 1955 she was a representative of the Webster Publishing Co, Webster Grove, Mo, school book publishers. A Montgomery County native, she was born Sept 28, 1889, near New Market, a daughter of Daniel B. and Ann Reynolds VanCleave. Her marriage to Merle Coons was in June of 1910. Surviving are a son, Harold M. Coons of New Albany and two grandsons, Stephen of Columbus and Phillip of New Albany. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home here with Rev. Frank Little officiating. Burial will be in Indian Creek Hill Cemetery.
