Charles Robert Coons, 66 of 5 Eastgate Drive died at 1:34 p.m. Tuesday in Lane House nursing Care Center. He was employed by Indiana Farm Bureau from 1957 until his retirement in 1981. He served as manager of the Crops Div. Mr. Coons helped organize Cooperative Seeds Inc and served as pres of the board 1979-1981. He had served as a director of Indiana Plant Food & Agricultural Cheicals Association. He also was manager of Indiana Crop Association at Purdue University from 1952 - 1957. He was a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge & American Legion. He graduated from Austin HS in 1938 and received a bachelor's degree in agriculture at Purdue in 1942. He taught school for five years. He served in the Army during WWII and Korean War. Mr. Coons was born at Austin on Oct 31, 1920 to Charles H. and Mable Harrod Coons. He was married in 1941 to Imogene Taylor, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert Dennis Coons of Crawfordsville; 3 daughters, Rita Jean Binder of Plattsmouth, Neb; Sandra Kay Racine and Denise Anne Coons of Indianapolis; five grandchildren; two stepgrand children ; four brothers, William of Paris Ccrossing, James of Sellersburg, John of Louisville, KY and Frank of Marietta, GA; and two sisters, Ruth Cox of Austin and Margaret Jean Kersey of Gaffney, SC. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Sat in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Wallace McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery where the Amerian Legion will conduct military rites. Friends may call at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Friday - family requests memorial contributions be made to American Cancer Society.
