Clarkson - Joseph S.

Joseph S. Clarkson died at his home in Coal Creek Township Jan. 7, 1900, in the 64th year of his age. He was born in Coal Creek Township, Oct. 31, 1836, and was the second son of Lewis and Charlotte Clarkson, nee Gregory. His parents came to Coal Creek Township from Butler County, Ohio, during the summer of 1835. They were sturdy pioneers and had all the experiences of pioneer life. The grandparents also made their home with this son and his wife. They formerly came from New Jersey. The grandfather was an educated man, taught school and was justice of the peace.

Joseph was married to Amanda Harlow, Oct. 31, 1862. Two children blessed this union, Lewis and Jennie C., who survive him. He, with his wife, united with Pleasant Hill Christian Church in February, 1865, under the labors of Rev. W. T. Warbinton, who also baptized him. His wife died Aug. 15, 1899, and he never fully recovered from the shock sustained in her loss, and his health rapidly failed. His entire life was spent in Coal Creek Township and was always known as a quiet, industrious, conscientious, Christian man.
This was a quiet and happy family: Father, mother, son, and daughter. Many years peace and prosperity smiled upon them, but affliction and death came and the tie was severed, the home broken, no more to be united until they meet beyond this earthly life in the home of the soul, where so many of our friends and loved ones are at rest.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. T. Phillips on Monday, at Pleasant Hill Christian Church. Interment was in the cemetery there. -s
