Mrs. Dorothy Christie, 28 of Crawfordsville was almost instantly killed at 7:4 o’clock Sunday night when a Nash coupe in which she was riding with Floyd Mullins, 1401 Greenbush Street crashed into a cattle truck parked at Wabash Avenue & Ellsworth Street. She was dead when extricated from the wreckage.
Mullins was cut across the forehead and bruised about the chest. Following the accident, he was placed in jail and Monday morning in the city court charged with involuntary manslaughter. Francis J. Murphy represented the accused and asked that the bond be fixed. Judge Raymond Robertson fixed it at $10,000. Mrs. Christie for the past few months has been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Davis, 1521 North 9th Street. She was the wife of Frank Christie. They were married more than six years ago in St. Louis, Mo. Then they went to Crawfordsville to live. Last New Year’s Day, Christie left his home to go after some tobacco and never returned. According to Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Christie advertised for him over the radio and through newspapers, but never received an answer. She came to Lafayette later and worked in various restaurants. Her last employment was the Liberty Restaurant on lower Main street. Mrs. Davis said she had not been working since last October. Mrs. Christie had been keeping company with Mullins for nearly two months, Mrs. Davis said. Mullins called at the Davis home shortly after 7:30 o’clock Sunday night for Mrs. Christie and they left together. A few minutes later the accident occurred.
Mullins, who is a fireman on the Monon railroad had been drinking, according to some witnesses. He made two statements, one that he did not see the truck, the other made to Prosecutor Mark L. Thompson that he saw the truck and so did Mrs. Christie that she said, “You are going to hit that truck,” and he started to turn out.
The car struck the 7,900 pound truck with tremendous force. The brake was set and it was in gear, but the impact drove the truck over the curb and into Ellsworth street. The right half of the coupe, as it was traveling south came in contact with the truck. The radiator ran under the stock body which crashed through the windshield and front of the car on the side where Mrs. Christie was seated. It struck her with great force. When the truck finally hurtled the curb, the Nash coupe turned over and the body of Mrs. Christie was found with the car lying across her chest. Dr. OU Chenoweth, deputy coroner ordered the body removed to the Soller Funeral parlors.
Mrs. Frank Christie, 414 Lafayette avenue, Crawfordsville, mother-in-law of the unfortunate woman, was notified of the accident Monday and stated that she would come to Lafayette to make funeral arrangements. Mrs. Davis stated Monday that it had been Mrs. Christie’s intention to go to Crawfordsville this week to spend Christmas with her mother-in-law as she had no other relatives.
