James Martin Chadwick, 92, Civil War veteran and one of the oldest natives of the county died at his home, 211 Poplar Street Tuesday morning at 4 o’clock. Death was due to a complication of diseases and followed an illness of only a week.  Mr. Chadwick served through the Civil War.  He enlisted at Lafayette soon after the outbreak of the Civil War but transferred to Co I, Second NY cavalry – known as the Harris Light Brigade a short time later. The veteran took part in many of the most important engagements of the war between the states.  He was present at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox as the war was --- recall to his many friends the words of Gen. US Grant, the Union commander as he told the confederate soldiers to keep their horses to use in their spring plowing.  Mr. Chadwick enlisted in the Union Army Aug 3, 1861 and was discharged June 23, 1865.  The deceased was born east of t his city May 1, 1842 the son of Jehu and Peninah VanHook Chadwick.  He was married May 7, 1874 to Mary A. Hopper.  He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. The survivors include two sons, Carl Chadwick who lived with his father and Charles Chadwick of Pekin, Ill and two daughters, May Cole and Ethel Fry, both of this city. The funeral services will be held at the Hunt & Ratcliff Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Rev. JH Wilson pastor of the First Christian Church will be in charge of the services.  Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may view the remains at the funeral home until time for the services. The death of Mr. Chadwick leaves only six surviving Civil War veterans in the city. They are: Joseph Airhart; Dr EH Cowan; John C. Kennedy; Patrick Henry Lalley; Peter Schreiner, Sr and David Mitchell, the latter a colored man who served with the Union Army.  Four other Civil War veterans lived in the county outside Crawfordsville. They are John W. Logan of Ladoga; William McCarthy of Wingate; Albert Booher of Darlington and John C. Knox of Whitesville. – kbz
