JOHN CISENA

Source: 1855 - Crawfordsville Weekly Journal August 30, p 2

On Friday week a most atrocious murder was committed. John Cisena was killed by his wife. The parties were residing some 89 or 10 miles from Linden. It appears that the murderer was either a second or third wife, had some disagreement ccurred in regard to the children. The murdered man had just returned home with a barrel of whiskey somewhat intoxicated and had apparently laid down upon the floor, covered with a blanket and gone to sleep, while his fendish wife took an axe and struck him several blows on the head, killing him instantly. At least he was found in this position by the nieighbors and these are supposed to be the facts. The woman, however, states that she killed him in self defense, but this is not believed. Between the two, they had six children, all of whom, but one had previously been sent away to play. Every circumstance connected with the affair, goes to prove that it was a foul and cold blooded murder while the victim was under the influence of whiskey. Oh, whiskey how much have you to answer for! What foul crimes have you instigated, how many children made fatherless, how many heartless made desolate? What sins and crimes have you not committed? What should be your punishment but eternal banishment from the haunts of men? Council Bluff Eagle.
