Estel T. Cheek, 65, who was known as a basketball player both in high school and on the R.R. Donnelley team, died Saturday afternoon in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he had been a patient since March 7. He was a veteran of WWII, chaplain of Wingate American Legion Post 174, and a member of the First Christian Church in Crawfordsville. He was born Oct. 10, 1907, at Mt. Vernon, Ky., to Charles and Mary Ann Head Cheek. He was married to Mildred Coon June 28, 1933. Mr. Cheek lived in Wingate until 1968 when he and his wife moved to Crawfordsville. He was employed by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. for 45 years as a hand compositer. He retired on Oct. 31, 1972. Surviving besides the wife are two brothers, Earl of Winchester and Richard of Wingate; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Grimes, Crawfordsville; three aunts and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, J. W. Cheek; an infant brother and a sister who died in childhood. Funeral services will be conducted at the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown at 10:30 Tuesday morning with Rev. Howard F. Miller officiating. Wingate American Legion Post will conduct military rites at graveside at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Wingate, Ind. - Estel Cheek, 65, of Wingate, died at 3 p.m. Saturday (March 24, 1973) at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Oct. 10, 1907, at Mount Vernon, Ky., he was the son of Charles and Mary Ann Head Cheek. He was married June 28, 1933, to Mildred Coon of Wingate, who survives. He graduated from Wingate High in 1927 and retired Oct. 31, 1972, from R.R. Donnelley in Crawfordsville after 45 years. He was a basketball player in high school and on the Donnelley team for many years. He was a veteran World War II and chaplain of American Legion Post 174 at Wingate. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Crawfordsville. Other survivors include two brothers, Earl of Winchester and Richard of Wingate; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Grimes of Crawfordsville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.W., an infant brother and a sister. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. EST Tuesday at Servies-Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown, with the Rev. Howard F. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Wingate with military rites by the American Legion. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday.
