Darlington - Mrs. Lulu M. Chambers, 97, Darlington's oldest resident and longtime businesswoman and former school teacher of the community died Monday morning at the Ben Hur Home in Crawfordsville where she had been living since Jan 10. Mrs. Chambers had operated the Chambers Hotel for more than 60 years and was on the board of the Darlington Public Library for 50 years. She was born Jan 9, 1869, near Darlington. She married Elmer E. Chambers April 15, 1896. He died in February, 1960. Mrs. Chambers was a member of the Darlington Book Lovers Club, the Phythian Sisters and had joined the Darlington Congregational Christian Church in January 1894. In the church, she was benevolence secretary, a church school teacher and active in the Woman's Fellowship for many years. She attended the old Ladoga Normal School and Indiana State University when it was Indiana State Normal. She was a grade school teacher at Darlington and in Sugar Creek Township schools for several years. Mrs. Chambers and her husband established the Chambers Hotel more than 60 years ago. She continued to operate it after her husband died five years ago. She was the only person who was associated with the public library continuously for 50 years since its beginning. In recognition of her long and faithfuls ervice the library board named her secretary emeritus. Survivors include 3 cousins, Jesse Caster of Lebanon Road, Mrs. Glen Saidla of Crawfordsville Rt 7, and Mrs. Forrest Ward of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bright Funeral Home in Darlington with Rev. Leonard Siff officiating. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Tuesday. - kbz
